Step out from your holiday cottage in Northumberland

12 Jun 2025

Guests staying at our luxury holiday cottages in Northumberland can choose from a myriad of amazing walks many of which start literally from the doorstep and include:

Cochrane Pike (4.5 miles circular) is an invigorating walk along age old cart tracks and upland pathways where you are accompanied by the sounds of curlews, skylarks and meadow pipits.

Views across the Cheviot foothills towards Hedgehope Hill and The Cheviot are as spectacular as they are uplifting. Glance over to the east on a clear day and the Northumberland Coast is visible, or gaze south towards the wonderful Simonside Hills near Rothbury,

At Turf Knowe, the ancient remains of two Bronze Age (2500 – 800 BC) burials can be seen and the finds are on display in Ingram Café.

Breamish Valley Hillfort Walk (4.5 miles circle) is an interesting upland walk taking in no less than five ancient hillforts!

The prehistoric forts were built by ancient Britons 2300 years ago and today the remains of grassy mounds and stone circles remain visible in the hills above Cheviot Holiday Cottages. The upland area containing these forts is now designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument thus affording the additional layer of protection these historic remnants deserve.

This strenuous hill route includes the hillforts of Brough Law, Middle Dean, Cochrane Pike, Wether Hill and Ingram Hill. A shorter version of 2.5 miles covering three forts can alternatively be followed.

Linhope Spout is a 60-foot chute of water plunging to a ‘bottomless’ pool in a magical idyllic setting surrounded by steep rocks, grassy banks native trees and the sounds of wildlife – the ideal picnic spot!

Walk directly out from our luxury self-catering accommodation at Ingram in Northumberland (8-mile return) or start deeper into the Ingram Valley from Hartside Farm (3 miles).
